چکیده

In retailing, decisions about product assortment and shelf space allocation have a significant effect on customers’ purchasing decisions. Traditionally, researchers usually employed the space elasticity to optimize product assortment and space allocation models. However, the large number of parameters requiring to estimate and the nonlinear nature of space elasticity can reduce the efficacy of the space elasticity based models. Instead of space elasticity, this paper utilizes a data mining approach, Sequence Alignment Method (SAM), to resolve the product assortment and allocation problems in retailing. In our approach, the SAM is applied to explore the relationships between product categories and is compared to association rule mining. Experimental results show that SAM achieves better quality than that of association rule mining and can generate very useful information to shelf space management.

A data mining approach to product assortment and shelf space allocation

In retailing, a variety of products compete to be displayed in the limited shelf space since it has a significant effect on demands. To affect customers’ purchasing decisions, retailers properly make decisions about which products to display (product assortment) and how much shelf space to allocate the stocked products (shelf space allocation). In the previous studies, researchers usually emplo...

A joint optimisation model for inventory replenishment, product assortment, shelf space and display area allocation decisions

In this paper, we propose an optimisation model to determine the product assortment, inventory replenishment, display area and shelf space allocation decisions that jointly maximize the retailer’s profit under shelf space and backroom storage constraints. The variety of products to be displayed in the retail store, their display locations within the store, their ordering quantities, and the all...

A temporal data mining approach for shelf-space allocation with consideration of product price

Marketing research has suggested that the in-store stimuli such as shelf-space allocation and product assortment have great influence on customer buying behaviour and may induce sales by maximizing impulse buying and cross-selling. The previous studies, however, have ignored the effect of product price in shelf-space arrangement. That is, they study the relationship between products and their s...

An Application of the ABS LX Algorithm to Multiple Sequence Alignment

We present an application of ABS algorithms for multiple sequence alignment (MSA). The Markov decision process (MDP) based model leads to a linear programming problem (LPP), whose solution is linked to a suggested alignment. The important features of our work include the facility of alignment of multiple sequences simultaneously and no limit for the length of the sequences. Our goal here is to ...

Optimizing product assortment under customer-driven demand substitution

The problem of product assortment and inventory planning under customer-driven demand substitution is analyzed and a mathematical model for this problem is provided in this paper. Realistic issues in a retail context such as supplier selection, shelf space constraints, and poor quality procurement are also taken into account. The performance of three modified models, one that neglects customers...
